Livorno, the Medici port city
By Tuscan standards Livorno is a young city. Its growth began in the late sixteenth century, when the Medici turned it into a free port and, through the laws known as the leggi livornine, drew in merchants and families of every origin and faith. The port still drives the economy, and the Fortezza Vecchia and the seafront Terrazza Mascagni are its best-known sights. The island of Elba belongs to the same province.
