In Lombardy the land use plan of each municipality is called Piano di Governo del Territorio (regional law 12 of 2005) and replaced the old town plan (PRG). Other regions use different names, but it does the same job: in Veneto the land structure plan (PAT) and the operational plan (PI), in Piedmont the municipal town plan (PRGC), in South Tyrol the municipal plan.

It has three parts:

• the plan document (documento di piano), with the transformation areas, where the municipality plans to build or change the use;
• the services plan (piano dei servizi), with the areas for schools, green space, car parks and other public facilities, existing or planned: a private area set aside for a new facility is usually subject to compulsory purchase;
• the rules plan (piano delle regole), with the already built-up town (tessuto urbano consolidato), historic centres, agricultural areas and the rules on heights, volumes and uses.

There is also the geological study, with feasibility from 1 to 4, and the landscape sensitivity map, from 1 to 5.

The Region gathers the maps of all municipalities in an open mosaic, which the report uses to say what the plan provides for the parcel; Veneto, the Province of Bolzano and the Metropolitan City of Turin do the same.
