Census section
Sezione di censimento
The smallest area for which Istat publishes data on residents, households and homes. In cities it often corresponds to a single block.
Istat, the Italian National Institute of Statistics, divides each municipality into census sections (sezioni di censimento): in built-up areas they are small, often a single block, while in the countryside they can be much larger. In 2021 there were more than 750,000 of them in Italy.
For each section Istat publishes, under the CC BY 4.0 licence, the number of residents by age band, foreign residents, households, and occupied and unoccupied homes. Since the permanent census began, the data has been released every two years (2021, 2023); for 2011 there is data from the traditional census, with partly different boundaries.
In the report, the section where the address falls describes the immediate area and is compared with the whole municipality. In sections with only a few dozen residents, percentages change a lot even when only a few people move.
